Therapeutic Recreation applies methodologies to recreation & leisure education and activities, designed to improve the quality of life and overall functioning of participants, through intervention modalities that address the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and leisure needs of clients.

TR is an established health profession with a holistic approach to promoting the important connection between health and recreation education and participation.

This use of recreation & leisure from a biopsychosocial approach to wellness, assists clients in developing skills, knowledge, and behaviors for daily living and community involvement.

Participation in recreation therapy programs utilizing adapted recreation & leisure activities helps to restore, remediate, and rehabilitate clients to reduce or eliminate limitations to participation in life situations caused by illness or disabling conditions. This allows them them to generalize therapeutic outcomes into their lives after the healthcare team is no longer involved, resulting in greater health maintenance over time.
